India’s Time is Now!

A College Counselor is definitely the unsung hero of the education industry because the advise a counselor gives shapes the career and subsequently the life of a student. However, counselors usually tend to be swamped with work (plus these days most of us suffer from TLDR syndrome) and find it increasingly tough to keep abreast with the most current information in an industry as fluid as education. Therefore, I wanted to come up with a quick and handy tool which will provide you with key takeaways as you advise 'future ready' students. The India Skills Report is released every year and this 128-paged document is a great resource for every stakeholder in the education industry. I've called upon a trusted sourceDr. Srisharan Govindarajan, Strategic Business Unit Head - Sponsored Research and Tech Transfer, IIT Madras Global, to decipher the report for us and highlight points that would be relevant for counselors globally.

India’s Decade: How Our Talent is Taking Over the World
The India Skills Report 2025 makes one thing clear: the world needs Indian talent—and we’re ready to deliver.

With countries across the Gulf, Europe, and Southeast Asia facing massive skill shortages,

India is stepping up as the global supplier of tech wizards, healthcare heroes, and AI pioneers. But is the dream as smooth as it sounds? Let’s break it down.

India’s Talent Boom: A Goldmine for the Global Job Market
Over 65% of our workforce is under 35—that’s millions of young, skilled, and ambitious professionals looking for opportunities. And guess what? The demand is sky-high.

  • Europe? Needs over 2 million tech professionals by 2030.
  • The Gulf? Massive demand in construction, healthcare, and IT.
  • Southeast Asia? Booming in e-commerce, AI, and cybersecurity.

With AI, automation, and green energy reshaping industries, Indian professionals are in the driver’s seat—if we play it right.

The Numbers Don’t Lie: India is Gearing Up for Global Success Over the past decade, India’s graduate employability rate has jumped from 33% to 50%. That’s a 17% leap—and it’s just the beginning.

  • AI Automation? India is on track to have 1 million AI professionals by 2026.
  • Cybersecurity? One of the fastest-growing skill sets worldwide.
  • Green Energy? India is investing heavily in solar, wind, and sustainability talent.

With government initiatives like Skill India, the National Education Policy (NEP), and

Digital India, we’re ensuring that our workforce isn’t just large—but globally competitive.

The Reality Check: Is Global Hiring Really That Easy?
Hold on—before we pack our bags, let’s talk about the challenges.

  • Tougher Immigration Rules – Many countries are prioritizing local hiring, making it harder for foreign professionals to settle in.
  • AI Replacing Jobs – With automation taking over, demand for human workers is shrinking in some sectors.
  • The Skills Gap – While India has the numbers, do we have the right skillsets? Many companies still struggle to find “job-ready” candidates.

The report rightly suggests aligning our education system with global standards, ensuring

that Indian degrees are recognized worldwide, and making international certification easier.

The Verdict: India’s Time is NOW
The world is looking for skilled professionals, and India is sitting on a goldmine of talent.

  • For businesses – This is a wake-up call to invest in international partnerships and upskilling programs.
  • For policymakers - Time to streamline talent migration policies and strengthen India’s global job pipeline.
  • For job seekers – The future belongs to those who embrace AI, cybersecurity, and automation.

India has the numbers, the drive, and the opportunities. Now, we just need to seize the moment.

Dr. Srisharan's final take
The India Skills Report 2025 highlights India’s massive potential as a global talent supplier, but I see a bigger question—are we just exporting talent, or are we building something bigger? It’s great that Indian professionals are in demand worldwide, but we should also focus on making India a hub for innovation, not just a talent pipeline. Instead of just filling global job gaps, why not create world-changing companies and industries from India, for the world? If we get this right, this won’t just be India’s decade—it’ll be India’s era.
