As high school counselors, we play a crucial role in shaping the academic and emotional well-being of our students. In today's diverse and interconnected environment, understanding cultural competence is more important than ever. Suhaas Chandra, a passionate educator, visionary, and fellow high school counselor, emphasizes this importance in his exploration of cultural competence. He leads transformative initiatives at Suchitra Academy that redefine career guidance for students, from pioneering the Udaan advisory board to launching immersive internship programs and global university collaborations. With five years of teaching experience and having authored two books focused on personality development, Suhaas is dedicated to researching effective pedagogies and inspiring a love of learning in others.
My first lesson as a counselor is always to be unbiased but, let’s be honest—online degrees still carry stigma. People assume they’re easier, less rigorous, or second-best. He was a stellar student with the credentials to get into any physical degree program of his choice and his parents were open to the idea of paying full tuition for his bachelor's in the U.S. as well.
How many of us have the liberty of making our avocation our vocation? Career counselors, I believe, are some of the blessed few, who have been able to do that. The passion, the grit, the sheer love for students and revelling in their success, is what landed us our jobs as counselors and helps us wake up every morning, happy and ready to take on a new day and a new student. As a journalism major one of the first and most important lessons you're taught is newsworthiness, and all of us would have our own mnemonics to remember what makes an item newsworthy, it's so etched in my memory that I have it at the tip of my tongue to date. In my bid to bring you the most newsworthy content, the counselor that first came to my mind, who satisfies all the elements of newsworthiness is Ramya Modukuri. With a two decade career spanning technology, finance and counseling across multiple countries, Ramya brings a highly disciplined, processes-oriented approach to career and college advising. Her specialty lies in helping schools set up their counseling practice and this is what she is currently doing at The Shri Ram Academy Hyderabad, India. In addition to authoring popular articles on counseling, she has presented at 35+ panels and sessions at national and international counseling conferences.
