Standing with Global Dreamers: Support Strategies for International Students in Turbulent Times
As counselors dedicated to empowering young minds worldwide, we understand that each student’s journey to the United States is more than just paperwork—it’s a story of hope, resilience, and transformation. I recently read an inspiring article by my close friend and celebrated advocate for international education, Blair Thomson, Senior International Officer and Director of Study Abroad at the the University of Mississippi.
Blair and I have shared many hours together—travelling across India on road trips, musing about our own stories as beneficiaries of international education. Both of us once navigated new worlds as international students, forging paths in unfamiliar territory. Her perspectives on Coming to America resonated deeply, and I believe they will inspire us all in supporting our students’ ambitions.
The Emotional Weight of the Journey
Blair beautifully states, “For many immigrants, coming to America is more than just crossing borders; it’s stepping into a world filled with hopes, dreams, and sometimes, fears.” This highlights the emotional toll that students carry—hope intertwined with uncertainty. As counselors, it’s our responsibility to help them navigate this terrain, recognizing their strength amid the difficulties.
Resilience in the Face of Challenges
She emphasizes resilience: “Arrivals face language barriers, cultural differences, and sometimes outright discrimination, but the strength they exhibit is nothing short of inspiring.” Behind every application and visa process is a person who has invested emotionally, physically, and financially in their dreams. Recognizing this helps us reinforce their resilience and determination.
The Power of Community Support
Blair underscores a vital point: support networks—family, mentors, peers—are essential. Building these connections helps newcomers find their footing in a new environment. This is where our influence as counselors can be transformative—guiding students to find community and purpose.
The Current Political Landscape and Its Impact
Today’s political climate presents significant hurdles for international students. Blair reminds us that, “coming to America is more than just crossing borders; it’s a deeply personal and courageous decision.” Yet, amidst shifting policies, bans, and administrative hurdles, the path to higher education has become more uncertain and stressful.
Recent tightening of visa restrictions, policies cloaked in national security concerns, and rising fees threaten the hope and opportunity that traditionally drew many students to the U.S. Blair emphasizes, “international students are some of the most vetted and scrutinized visa recipients into the U.S.—they choose this country for its opportunities, its culture, and its promise.” Their decision is motivated by hope and trust in the U.S. as a land of opportunity. When policies create barriers, it’s our collective duty to uphold values of inclusion and support.
Blair reminds us that “support networks—family, mentors, peers—are the foundation that help newcomers find their place in new environments. We owe them empathy, understanding, and action.” Even in turbulent times, safeguarding the ideals of the American Dream is more critical than ever.
A Call for Compassion and Advocacy
Supporting international students isn’t just good practice—it’s a moral imperative. As counselors, our roles extend beyond academic guidance; we are advocates for resilience, empathy, and inclusion. Blair’s unwavering support for international education serves as a reminder of this shared duty.
